HEPATITIS C

This is basically an infection of the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus. There are several forms of the virus and they all have different ways of treatment. The virus spreads through the blood or body fluids of an infected person. Some infected people develop a long-term infection called chronic hepatitis C and can lead to conditions such as liver cancer and cirrhosis

HOW DO I GET INFECTED?

  • Sharing drugs and needles
  • Having unprotected sex of any kind with an infected person
  • From mother to child through the birth process

HOW DO I KNOW I MAY BE INFECTED?

  • Jaundice (Yellowish discolouration of the eyes and skin)
  • Stomach pain
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

HOPE

Most people do well on the combination of certain antivirals for treatment.

CAUTION

There’s no vaccine to prevent hepatitis C, hence to avoid getting the virus:

  • Use condoms every time you have any kind of sex
  • Do not share personal items like razor
  • Be careful when getting a tattoo or piercing and ensure new or sterilised equipment are used.
